Part 7: The Roswell Connection

"It's tonight's bill of fare on the Twilight Zone."

Nothing has been better than to prove the Atari Landfill story true, but what if there were a link to the 1947 Roswell UFO incident? (Besides a good joke.) As most people have discovered, the landfill story itself is a personification of "truth is stranger than fiction", but what if you had two major subculture events connected to each other that places two extra terrestrials in New Mexico?

This plot is something that would make even the oldest veteran writer of the X-Files jealous, so get out your cell phones and dial Mulder and Scully because I'm going to rock your world with yet another "Truth is Stranger than Ficiton" moment!

McQuiddy Geneology

I posted in section three, the complete (atari landfill) newspaper articles written by Marian Elizabeth McQuiddy. I also sighted a new update stating that Marian had been found and she had passed away earlier this year (For informational purposes I also posted her Obit. in section three.). Marian was the primary factor to overcome in the story of the landfill, since she was the original author of the story (one other newspaper just copied her story) and was the only source. Since Marian was "unlocateable", it cast serious doubt on the story. Since that time, I have uncovered more information regarding Marian's family and her fathers history.

Marian's father was Arthur R. McQuiddy of Roswell, NM and it was by no chance that Marian became a news reporter. Arthur was the managing editor of the Roswell Morning Dispatch in 1947-1948. If this newspaper's name seems familiar, you may remember a July 8th, 1947 headline reading "RAAF Captures Flying Saucer on Ranch in Roswell Region".

The Roswell Connection

It seems that not only did Mr. Arthur McQuiddy work for the Roswell Morning Dispatch, but was also directly involved in the publishing of the story on the front page of the paper. This is not just because he was the newspaper's editor, but the press release from the Air Force official was handed directly to him.

The following is a signed affidavit from Arthur McQuiddy. This document has been fiercely verified by UFO hunters and is commonly sighted as proof of the Roswell Incident. Arthur also appeared in a TV documentary called, "Secret History: The Roswell Incident", and confirmed the story and the document. The orginal text is commonly posted to UFO/Roswell related websites, and I provide the uneditied text here:

AFFIDAVIT OF ARTHUR R. MCQUIDDY

(1) My name is Arthur R. McQuiddy

(2) My address is: XXXXXXXXXX

(3) I am employed as: __________________________________,( ) retired

(4) In July 1947, I was editor of the Roswell Morning Dispatch, one of the
two newspapers here at the time. In 1948, I left the paper to become public relations director of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association and later joined U.S. Stell as director of media relations. About eleven years ago I returned to Roswell after retiring as senior vice president for corporate relations at International Harvester.

(5) Just before noon one day early in July 1947, Walter Haut, the public relations officer at Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF), brough a press release to me in the Dispatch office. The release said a crashed flying saucer had been found, taken to RAAF, and sent on to another base.

(6) Haut had been to the two local radio stations, KGFL and KSWS, before coming to the Dispatch, so I gave him a bad time about that. Haut said the base policy was to rotate who got releases first to make sure everyone got a ir shake. We were a morning apper, so our edition for that day had long since hit the street, but I was disappointed at not being able to break the story on the Associated Press wire. George Walsh, the program manager at KSWS, had already moved the story on AP.

(7) Not long after Haut left, a call came from RAAF. The caller said the release was incorrect, that what had been though to be the wreckage of a flying saucer was actually the remains of a radiosonde balloon. However, the AP wire story had gotten the world's attention. I spent the rest of the afternoon taking long distance calls from overseas news editors. I remember calls from Rome, London, Paris, and Hong Kong.

(8) Colonel William H. ("Butch") Blanchard, commander of RAAF and its 509th Bomb Group, was a good friend of mine. We often got together for a drink and off the record discussions of base-town relations and the like. After the flying saucer incident, I tried several times to get Blanchard to tell me the real story, but he repeatedly refused to talk about it.

(9) About three or four months after the event, when we were a bit more "relaxed" than usual, I tried again. Blanchard reluctantly admitted he had authorized the press release. Then, as best I remember, he said, "I will tell you this and nothing more. The stuff I saw, I've never seen anyplace else in my life." That was all he would say, and he never told me anything else about the matter,

(10) I have not been paid or given anything of value to make this statement, and it is the truth to the best of my recollection.

I'am currently seeking to interview Arthur about his daughter and his connection to the Roswell Incident.

What this means... some final thoughts...

In the end, this means nothing. Arthur's story adds a bit of perplexing humor and irony to the story of the Atari Landfill, but does nothing for the event itself. I do find it interesting that Arthur is involved in a controversial UFO incident and his daughter involved in a controversial gaming incident that both occurred in New Mexico. Strange but true seems to be the running theme of this story...
